JG Ballard wrote a story in 1963, 'The Subliminal Man', about sinister roadside signposts which encouraged galloping consumerism. And the fear of subliminal messages has been with us since then.
An article in New Scientist News shows that maybe these fears are not unfounded. They found that 'fear' words (rape, kill, knife, blood) flashed on a screen too fast for the conscious mind to register, and interspersed with 'neutral' words, still had the power to raise activity in the part of the brain which registers strong emotions like fear.
All the more reason to stick to books, clear of flashing words!
